An Ingo Maurer “Uchiwa I” Large Floor/Wall Lamp for M Design, Germany, 1970s.
Arguably the most spectacular of the 1970s Ingo Maurer ‘Uchiwa’ range, a hand made floor lamp standing some 7 feet high/2.2m, named the “Uchiwa I”, uchiwa being Japanese for fan. Maurer intended to create lighting that created a soft glow, “a warmer, more eye‐pleasing light,” in his own words.
Maurer travelled to Japan to develop his Uchiwa range where he found artisans who could still recall the traditional methods of fan making and handcrafted them using bamboo and lacquered rice paper.
The Uchiwa range consisted of wall lights, table lights, this floor lamp and also pendants.
A fragile piece which is in immaculate vintage condition for age.
