Description
An “Uchiwa” wall light by Ingo Maurer for M design, Germany, 1970s.
Uchiwa lamps, uchiwa being the Japanese for fan, were handmade from bamboo, wicker and Japanese rice paper. Maurer travelled to Japan to develop his uchiwa range where he found artisans who could still recall the traditional methods of fan making and handcrafted them using bamboo and lacquered rice paper.
With this range, Maurer intended to create lighting that created a soft glow, “a warmer, more eye‐pleasing light,” in his own words, rather than the more harsh and glaring light of much of the lighting in the 1960s and 70s.
The fixture is hung off a single nail and when lit emits a wonderfully warm hue.
The Uchiwa are a very fragile range of lights and it is rare to find these undamaged. This piece has had some damage repaired by a professional paper conservator, one crack in the paper/lacquer remains on the edge and measures around 1 inch but is relatively hard to spot, so too the repairs as they are mainly performed from the rear of the light but if you look close enough you will spot evidence of them. Please do expect general light imperfections in line with age and levels of fragility.
