An Ingo Maurer Uchiwa III Wall Lamp by for M Design, 1970s
Description
A hugely in-demand ‘Uchiwa’ wall light by Ingo Maurer for M design during the 1970s.
Uchiwa lamps were handmade from bamboo, wicker and Japanese rice paper. Ingo Maurer’s interest in paper for lampshades was linked with his interest in Japan. From 1973-1975 he produced various lamps from traditional Japanese fans. Uchiwa lamps were handmade using bamboo and Japanese rice paper and are now highly sought after.
The fixture is hung off a single nail and when lit emits a wonderfully warm hue.
Condition: The Uchiwa wall lights are fragile items and it is rare for these to be perfect, this Uchiwa has had some professional repairs to the rice paper by a paper restorer and conservator who also carries out work for the major museums in the UK. Repairs are mostly carried out on the rear side of the lights so they are not overly visible from the front, but for the avoidance of doubt if you have a good look at the lights you can see repairs.
