An early example of a "Ciprea" chair by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, Italy, 1967
This example features its original deep cream leather upholstery and being one of the first armchairs to be made of an injected polyurethane foam structure and padding without any internal frame it earned worldwide recognition. The Ciprea chair is now held in MoMA´s permanent and Maas
Powerhouse Design collections.
The Ciprea chair has interesting decorative features such as external vertical tucks in the leather and buttons along with a padded and ribbed backrest and fixed seat cushion and sits on a cylindrical base with four casters.
The condition for age is good. Some historic leather restoration has taken place mainly towards the base in the form of some minor repairs, a leather restoration colour wash appears to have been applied over the main areas of leather. To the underside lengths of cord secure the seat structure to the base, one of these lengths has historically been replaced but functions perfectly well. This is a good original example but wear and signs of age commensurate with a 50+-year-old piece including general colour inconsistencies, fading and discolouring and small imperfections should be expected.
